With decades of experience working with international donors, Alex Thier lists three key lessons to effect change and build capacity in fragile states.

Fragile environments are traditionally beset with the absence of competent, capable, and inclusive institutions. Examination across time and space has highlighted three key lessons in terms of how to deal with these challenges: i) These are fundamentally political processes, ii) Context-driven problem solving is needed, and iii) Problems should be broken down into smaller, manageable components.
