Rana Hendy

Assistant Professor and MPP Director, Department of Public Policy and Administration, American University in Cairo

Rana Hendy is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy and the Program Director of the Master in Public Policy at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, The American University in Cairo (AUC). She is also a Research Fellow at the Economic Research Forum (ERF) in Cairo. Dr. Hendy received her PhD in Labor and Gender Economics from the Paris School of Economics in 2011.

Her research focuses on labor markets and demographic policies in developing countries, with particular emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa. Her work examines female labor force participation, labor market institutions, family formation, and the future of work, with a strong focus on the role of social norms, care responsibilities, and policy design in shaping women’s economic outcomes.

Dr. Hendy has published in peer-reviewed journals, including Demographic Research, Applied Economics, the International Journal of Educational Development, and the Journal of North African Studies. She has also contributed to several edited volumes published by Oxford University Press on labor markets in the MENA region. Her most recent publication is the forthcoming book chapter, “Empowering Women: Unlocking Economic Potential in Egypt,” in The Oxford Handbook of the Egyptian Economy (Oxford University Press).
