David Torres Irribarra

David Torres Irribarra is an associate professor at the School of Psychology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He earned his psychology degree from PUC and his Ph.D. from the School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley.

His research focuses on latent variable modeling and statistical methods for measurement in the social sciences. His work applies item response theory and structural equation models to educational and psychological assessment, with applications in large-scale assessment programs. He has published in journals including Psychometrika, Multivariate Behavioral Research, and Measurement.

David served as Director of Information Technology at the Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Research (BEAR) Center at UC Berkeley, leading the development of psychometric software. He has worked as a senior measurement consultant on major national assessments in Chile—including the redesign of the university admissions test and national longitudinal early childhood development surveys—and has participated in research projects across Latin America and the United States.

His methodological work addresses the application of latent variable models to complex measurement problems, the theoretical foundations of measurement in the social sciences, and the design of digital assessment technologies. He is the author of "A Pragmatic Perspective of Measurement" (2021, Springer International).
