Alan de Brauw

Alan de Brauw is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), an area lead in the Better Diets and Nutrition CGIAR Science Program, leads IFPRI's impact assessment work, and the CGIAR impact assessment Community of Practice. He has a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California at Davis, and prior to joining IFPRI he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Williams College. Much of his research involves primary source data collection, and he has helped design, plan and conduct multi-topic household surveys in 16 low- and middle-income countries. His research is published widely in development economics, agricultural economics, and nutrition journals.

The case for tackling multiple constraints for smallholder farmers
A four-year study of smallholder farmers in Malawi finds that combining cash transfers with intensive agricultural extension produces larger and more durable gains in crop production and household consumption than either intervention alone.
