Evans Osabuohien
Professor of Economics, Covenant University
Evans Osabuohien is a globally recognised economist, policy strategist, and thought leader, serving as Professor of Economics at Covenant University and Founding Chair of DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC). With over 22 years of distinguished experience, he has led numerous high-impact research projects, authored five books, and published over 220 scholarly articles. His expertise spans economic development, trade intelligence, institutional effectiveness, and sustainable policy, and he has consulted extensively for international organisations including the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), United Nations Agencies (e.g., UNCTAD & UNU-WIDER), African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA), German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), among others.
He has consistently broken records in academic leadership, becoming the youngest Head of Department at Covenant University in 2016, and achieving a double promotion to Full Professor in December 2017. In 2020, he was recognised as one of Nigeria’s six youngest professors. He has founded and chaired leading research and policy institutions, including the Centre for Economic Policy and Development Research (CEPDeR) and Regional Centre of Expertise, Ogun (RCE Ogun), driving innovation in economic policy, governance, and sustainable development.
Internationally, he holds Visiting Professorships at Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique and University of Lusaka, Zambia and has served as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany as well as Swedish Institute Fellow, Sweden. He is also an external examiner to leading universities across Africa, Europe and Asia continents.
Beyond academia, Prof Osabuohien provides strategic advisory to multiple boards, including Covenant Microfinance Bank Ltd where he serves as Board Chair on ICT, Canadian Centre for Raw Materials Display Inc (CaCeRMDI), Canada (2021–2024), and OpenBinacle Group, Germany (2022–2025). He also coordinates the African Scholars Mentorship Network (ASMN) under DIaDeRC, engaging over 2,500 members across African countries and beyond. He is a Global Author for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)’s flagship report, 7th Edition of the Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-7), and presently serves on the Governing Council of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), contributing as Associate Editor.
Prof Osabuohien’s editorial leadership spans Elsevier’s Heliyon-Economics, Springer Nature’s Sustainable Development, and he is the Founding Editor of the Institutions and Development Research Journal (IDeRJ). A recipient of prestigious fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Swedish Institute, and German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) International Deans’ Course alumnus, he blends rigorous scholarship with practical insights in strategic foresight and policy innovation, making him a trusted resource personality for national and international discourses.
