Minouche Shafik

Until February 2017, Minouche Shafik was Deputy Governor for Markets and Banking at the Bank of England, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, the Financial Policy Committee and the Board of the Prudential Regulation Authority. The defining feature of her work is managing the balance sheet of the central bank at the heart of the leading global financial centre.  At this intersection of policymaking and implementation, she is responsible for the design and execution of quantitative easing, and for catalysing reforms to promote the effectiveness of financial markets more broadly. She co-chaired the Fair and Effective Markets Review and led the implementation of reforms to the Bank’s Sterling Monetary Framework, alongside the ongoing modernisation of the UK’s high value payments system.

Whilst at the Bank Minouche was a G20 Deputy and led the Bank’s engagement with the International Monetary Fund, where she was Deputy Managing Director from 2011-2014. In this previous role she was responsible for policy and programmes in Europe and the Middle East. Prior to that, she was Permanent Secretary of the UK’s Department for International Development. She has held academic appointments at the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Economics Department at Georgetown University and published on a variety of economic topics.

She took up an appointment as Director of the London School of Economics in September 2017.
