Niccolò is a Development Economist with a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. He uses experimental methods to study the mechanisms of institutional development in fragile states. His fundamental interest lies in deepening our understanding of how such positive institutional change occurs, how it evolves and sustains itself, and its impact on development outcomes. His work sits at the intersection of development economics (primary), political economy, and public economics. His research is grounded in policy reforms and development interventions, undertaken in partnership with policymakers, donors, development agencies, and practitioners.

Evidence from Sierra Leone shows that digital participatory budgeting can increase government legitimacy in weak states but only increases tax compliance for supporters of the incumbent government.
