Global value chains (GVCs) now account for almost half of global trade and there is a growing consensus that GVCs as a whole have helped growth in developing countries. In this episode of VoxDevTalks, Julia Cajal-Grossi and Rocco Macchiavello discuss the costs and benefits of participation in GVCs, focusing on insights from research on coffee and garment supply chains. They outline the key aspects of relationships between producers and buyers, and how contracting problems might solved by policy.
