Camila Steffens

Camila Steffens is a postdoctoral researcher at the ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim, Germany. Her research interests lie in the fields of empirical labour economics and applied microeconometrics, with particular attention to how workers, firms, and local labour markets adjust to labour demand shocks and regulatory changes. She also conducts research on causal inference methods, as well as on health and development economics.
Camila completed her undergraduate studies in economics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of São Paulo, both in Brazil. In December 2024, she obtained her PhD in economics with distinction from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. For further information, please visit Camila’s personal website.

Can smoking bans curb the habit?
Between 2009 and 2013, several Brazilian states and state capitals adopted strict smoking bans; this was followed by a national-level ban in 2014. Comprehensive bans and strict enforcement were crucial to the effectiveness of these policy efforts.
