Mahvish is an Economist in the Prosperity Research Program in the Development Research Group. Her research interests are public finance and governance. Recent work has focused on the determinants of tax compliance (particularly tax morale) and implications for tax policy; equity implications of tax policy and administration; improving the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and fairness of tax administration; and understanding how institutions and organizational structure affect state capacity. She received her PhD in economics from MIT in 2019.

Sharing research evidence with senior rather than junior staff significantly raises the chance it spreads through an organisation, but shifting peer beliefs about the evidence has no clear effect.
