Paula Carvalho Pereda

Paula Carvalho Pereda is a Full Professor at the Department of Economics of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her research interests lie in the fields of policy evaluation, with particular attention to environmental, health and gender policies. Paula completed her undergraduate studies, master’s degree and PhD in economic from the University of São Paulo. Since 2018, she has been part of the Brazilian delegation at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). She is also member of several research groups, including NEREUS-USP, EconomistAs [Brazilian Women in Economics], NUPENS-USP, USPproClima, and GeFam. Can smoking bans curb the habit?
Between 2009 and 2013, several Brazilian states and state capitals adopted strict smoking bans; this was followed by a national-level ban in 2014. Comprehensive bans and strict enforcement were crucial to the effectiveness of these policy efforts.
